Who we are?

The MOD is one of the biggest public procurement organisations in Europe, managing some of the most complex and technologically advanced requirements in the world.  We are UK industry’s single largest customer, buying everything from military fighting vehicles to education services and all kinds of facilities management services.

What we do

We protect the security, independence and interests of our country at home and abroad. We work with our allies and partners whenever possible. Our aim is to ensure that the armed forces have the training, equipment and support necessary for their work, and that we keep within budget. We support our Armed Forces by providing world-class solutions for delivering national defence and security for the UK whilst ensuring the best possible value for the taxpayer.

Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S)

Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) is a bespoke trading entity, an arm’s length body of the Ministry of Defence (MOD) whose responsibility is to equip and support the UK’s armed forces for current and future operations. Employing around 12,000 people and with a budget of £14 billion, DE&S plays a vital role in maintaining military operational capability by acquiring and supporting a wide range of world class equipment and services.

Defence Infrastructure Organisation

The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) plays a vital role in supporting our armed forces by building, maintaining and servicing the infrastructure needed to support defence. DIO is responsible for enabling defence people to live, work, train and deploy at home and overseas. The DIO vision is to equip defence with a significantly smaller, more efficient, better quality estate.

Joint Forces Command

The UK’s Joint Forces Command (JFC) manages joint capabilities from the three armed services. JFC provide the foundation and supporting framework for successful operations by ensuring joint capabilities like medical services, training, intelligence, information systems and cyber operations, are developed and managed. They also provide the command and control for overseas defence operations.

Defence Science and Technology Laboratory

The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) ensures that innovative science and technology contribute to the defence and security of the UK.  Dstl is an executive agency, sponsored by the MOD, and supplies specialist services to MOD and wider government. 60% of MOD’s science and technology programme (total funding: £410 million) is supplied by external partners in industry and academia worldwide.

As an executive agency of MOD, Dstl is run along commercial lines. It is one of the principal government organisations dedicated to science and technology in the defence and security field.

The Defence and Security Accelerator is part of Dstl.

Team Leidos

Team Leidos supports the UK MOD’s Logistic Commodities and Services Transformation programme, a critical effort to enhance and improve the UK’s defence supply chain – providing essential services such as:

  • Storage and distribution for the MOD’s materiel, including a global freight service.
  • Procurement and inventory management of food, packed fuels, clothing, medical materiel and general supplies.

Defence Electronics and Components Agency

Defence Electronics and Components Agency (DECA) provides benchmark support services as the principal in-house government organisation dedicated to maintenance, repair, overhaul, upgrade and procurement in the defence avionics, electronics and components field.

DECA is an executive agency, sponsored by the MOD.
